Fundamentals:

  • Numbering system (given that the characteristic carbonyl is on the right)
    • Inital numbering of the 6C ring
      • 1 position is the nitrogen pointing at the 6 o'clock position
        • Cytosine there are Ns at the 1, and 3 position
          • Carboxyl at the 2nd position
        • Uracil there are Ns at the 1, and 3 position
          • Carboxyl at the 2nd and 4th position
        • Thymine there are Ns at the 1, and 3 position
          • Carbonyl at the 2nd and 4th position
          • Methyl at the 5th position
