Combustion of pyruvate into Acetyl-CoA

  • Pyruvate + CoA into AcCoa
    • Pyruvic acid + Coenzyme A into Acetyl-CoA
      • Requires NAD
      • Produces CO2 and NADH

Steps:

  • Pyruvate is brought into the mitochondrial matrix
    • Transporter protein
      • Commits pyruvate to become Acetyl-CoA
  • Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Complex (3 enzymes + 5 coenzymes)
