IP3

Signal Transduction - Phospholipase C (PLC)

Directly causes the rapid release of Calcium from intracellular stores

Calcium (Ca)

Inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate (IP3)

  • Soluble product of PIP2 cleavage

Function/Purpose:

  • Interacts with IP3 Gated Channel/IP3 Receptor to allow the flow of Ca into the cytoplasm
  • Elevated Ca levels triggers variety of processes:
    • Smooth muscle contraction
    • Glugocgen breakdown
    • Vesicle release

Fundamentals:

  • Does not cause a cascade of phosphorylation to elicit a response
  • Short lived secondary messenger
