Pathogenesis:

  • Toxin modifies G Protein
    • Modificaiton DEC G protein's affinity for GTP
  • Galpha to inhibit Adenylate Cyclase (AC)
    • Inhibition of AC means DEC of enzyme's activity to cyclize AMP
    • DEC in [cAMP] ruins PKA activity
  • Closing Calcium (Ca)
  • Opening Potassium Channels

Symptoms:

  • Coughing spasms with distinctive whoop

Treatment:

  • Pharmacologics
