Midbrain/Mecensephalon
Function/Purpose:
- Peripheral Senses and Response: detects movement directs head and eye towards the movement
Anatomy:
- Cerebral peduncles - ventral portion of the midbrain
- Carry impulses to and from the cerebrum
- Mesencephalic/Cerebral aqueduct - channel in the middle of the brainstem
- Connects the third and fourth ventricles
- Corpora quadrigemina - dorsal portion of the midbrain
- Superior Colliculi: visual reflexes
- F1 - process auditory and visual impulses - 4 rounded tissue masses
- Red nucleus
- Substanria nigra
