Midbrain/Mecensephalon

Function/Purpose:

  • Peripheral Senses and Response: detects movement directs head and eye towards the movement

Anatomy:

  • Cerebral peduncles - ventral portion of the midbrain
    • Carry impulses to and from the cerebrum
  • Mesencephalic/Cerebral aqueduct - channel in the middle of the brainstem
    • Connects the third and fourth ventricles
    • Corpora quadrigemina - dorsal portion of the midbrain
  • Superior Colliculi: visual reflexes
    • F1 - process auditory and visual impulses - 4 rounded tissue masses
  • Red nucleus
  • Substanria nigra
