Ligand Gated Ion Channels

Signal Transduction

Fundamentals

  • Very fast response
  • Causes changes in ion concentration and plasma membrane voltage
  • Local and small concentrations of ligand
  • Termination - Reabsorption/inactivation of ligand
  • Regulation - by voltage

States:

  • Basal State - without neurotransmitter
    • Activation by neutrotransmiter binding
  • Activated State - binding opening the gate
    • Neurotransmitter can dissociated returning to basal state
    • Neutrotransmitter can remain
  • Inactivated State - neurotransmitter bound but channel closes
    • Eventual neurotransmitter release returning to basal state

LOC:

  • Neuron-Neuron
  • Neuron-Muscle
