Integral Membrane Proteins

Membrane Proteins

Proteins that are embedded in the hydrocarbon chains of membrane lipids

Fundamentals:

  • Released when membrane is ruptured

Types:

  • Alpha helix (MOST COMMON)
    • Few charged predominantly nonpolar
    • EX Bacteriorhodopsin
  • Beta sheets
    • Alteration of amino acids
    • EX Rhodopseudomonas

Examples:

  • GLUT
