Foundations of Surgical Technology
sens–>army navy–>goulets–>deavors **all instruments have progression levels (small to large or vice versa) from forceps, retractors, sutures, needle holders and etc. while pts range in height and weight. it takes time and practice but understanding the progression helps greatly.
*2nd Level – Preference, Pattern, Prevention, Contingencies and Calm: Begin to realize the patterns and preferences of docs and surgeries, being aware of potential hazards in surgery and preventing them before it happens, lastly you are the doc’s right hand man (that is sterile – while the circulator is the doc’s left hand man that is unsterile) if you lose focus when something atypical happens, just remember to reset (if possible) and begin again. everyone makes mistakes and most mistakes that a surg tech makes is usually reversible it just takes the demeanor to realize and reset.
*3rd Level – Anticipation: this is the highest level in where all the other levels are completed and the doc is most happy when there is LITTLE communication needed to get the job done even when the unexpected occurs. it is as if you are reading his/her mind and really cohesive as a team. as they say in chemistry the rate limiting reaction is often the slowest step. when the surg tech or circulator team is not the slowest step it only leaves the always time consuming suturing and actual procedure. 19/20 docs are happy and life is good. ”But enough about talk, lets get to SURGERY!”
