Central Nervous System

Brain

p361 and Embryology

Fundamentals:

Anatomy:

Divisions:
  • 1)Forebrain/Proscencephalon
    • Cerebrum/Telencephalon
    • Thalmus & Hypothalmus&Pituitary Gland/Diencephalon
  • Brain Stem
  • 2)Midbrain/Mesencephalon
    • Superior Colliculi
    • Inferior Colliculi
    • Cerebral Pendules
  • 3)Hindbrain/Rhombencephalon
    • Pons&Cerebellum/Metencephalon
    • Medula Oblongata/Myelencephalon

Organ Tissues:

  • 1)White matter
    • Association Fibers
    • Commissural Fibers
    • Projection Fibers
  • 2)Gray matter
    • Basal nuclei
      • Corpus Striatum
      • Caudate Nucleus
      • Lentiform Nucleus
        • Putamen
        • Globus Pallidus
      • Claustrum

Terminology:

  • Association Fibers: located only on that hemisphere and conducts impulses between neurons and set hemisphere
  • Commissural Fibers: connect the neurons and gyri of one hemisphere to other
  • Projection Fibers: ascending and descending tracts that transmit impulses from cerebrum to other parts of the brain and spinal cord to other parts of the brain and cerebrum
  • Basal Nuclei: specialized paired masses of gray matter located deep within the white matter
  • Gray matter - Central Nervous System
  • White matter - Central Nervous System
  • Brain Stem

Concepts:

  • Embryology - Notocord & etc

Application:

  • Caffeine - stimulant that increases the rate of transmission across the synapse.
