Electron Shell Theory
Function/Purpose:
- Allow to quantify electrons for basic atomic analysis
Fundamentals:
- There are shells that govern that are like the layers of atmosphere on earth
- Meaning as you get higher, the elevation rises
- Well in electron shell theory, the higher the shell the higher the energy
- Although the energy difference from the next shell becomes progressively smaller
- Along with shells, there are subshells or sublayers of the atmosphere
(n)/Shell Patterns
- K/First Shell - hold only 2 electrons
- L/Second Shell - holds only 8 electrons
- M/Third Shell - holds only 18 electrons
- N/Fourth Shell - holds only 32 electrons
- O/Fifth Shell - holds only 50 electrons
(l)/Subshell Patterns
- s/sharp - 2 electrons
- p/principal - 6 electrons
- d/diffuse - 10 electrons
- f/fundamental - 14 electrons
- g - 18 electrons
