Shortening of aldoses by removing an aldehyde at the top
Attacks aldoses
- 1)Oxidation: 6CSugar-C1OH -(Br2/H2O)-> 6CSugar-C1OOH
- 2)Decarbozylation: 6CSugar-C1OOH -(H2O2/Fe2(SO4)3)-> 5CSugar-C2OH + CO2
Mechanism:
Fundamentals:
- Note the oxidation step is ONLY for aldoses
Salient Examples:
Concepts:
- Oxidation
- Decarboxylation
