Hydrolyzes phosphodiester linkage joining the phosphorylated inositol unit to the acylated glycerol moiety

Phospholipase C

Fundamentals:

  • Does not cause a phosphorylation cascade like Adenylate Cyclase/cAMP
  • Pathway utilizes two products to activate Protein Kinase C
    • IP3 triggers Calcium (CA)
    • DAG and Calcium triggers Protein Kinase C

Function/Purpose:

  • PIP2 -(Phospholipase C)-> IP3 & DAG
    • IP3 reacts with an IP3 Gated Channel/Receptor --> Calcium (CA)
    • DAG reacts with Protein Kinase C (Calcium joins in activation)
