IP3
Signal Transduction -
Phospholipase C (PLC) Directly causes the rapid release of Calcium from intracellular stores
Calcium (Ca) Inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate (IP3)
- Soluble product of PIP2 cleavage
Function/Purpose:
- Interacts with IP3 Gated Channel/IP3 Receptor to allow the flow of Ca into the cytoplasm
- Elevated Ca levels triggers variety of processes:
- Smooth muscle contraction
- Glugocgen breakdown
- Vesicle release
Fundamentals:
- Does not cause a cascade of phosphorylation to elicit a response
- Short lived secondary messenger
